The Settle to Carlisle railway is an easy and comfortable way to see the stunning Yorkshire Dales landscape. It consists of 72 miles of track with 17 major viaducts and 14 tunnels. The greatest of the viaducts is the Ribblehead Viaduct which is 104 feet high and 440 yards long with 24 arches. The longest tunnel, 2629 yards, is at Blea Moor just above Ribblehead. A trip from Settle to Carlisle makes a great day out, with time in Carlisle for shopping or site seeing. But it is not neccessary to travel the complete distance, you can simply take a short journey and still see more of the Dales than you would by road. You can also combine a walk with a short journey on the railway. The scheduled trains run reasonably frequently and are normally simple modern railcars. However a number of special steam train journeys are run by various rail companies throughout the year. This makes a romantic way to see the Yorkshire Dales as well as making an evocative spectacle as the train crosses the Ribblehead Viaduct. |
